Faeries and Nature Spirits

It has always seemed bizarre to me that in any large bookshop, the texts on Faeries are to be found in either the children’s section or in fantasy and fiction. Books on Angels are usually grouped with Religion or Faith, but Faeries come under mythology. Likewise, any texts on Nature spirits are likely to be found in the Folklore section of History or Archaeology. This probably reflects the extent to which modern humans have become disconnected from the natural world, for a whole host of reasons, and also the ways in which we humans are often in too much of a hurry to take the time to watch, listen and learn from our natural environments.

Having said that, it is certainly the case that most of us are absolutely fascinated by fairies/faeries, from the iconic Tinkerbell in Disney’s version of Peter Pan to the malevolent witches in stories of good versus evil. Those who work with them and connect with them, faeries are undoubtedly real, although their form, just like the forms of the angels and other celestial or other worldly beings, is different from ours.

How Do I Connect with Faeries?

Working with Faeries is no more difficult than working with your spirit guides, angels, and celestial support teams. Very often, we tend to approach this kind of metaphysical work with a very serious attitude, believing that we will have to work hard to make it happen. The first thing you need to be aware of is that the more light-hearted your approach and attitude, the better the results will be. Faeries see “light-heartedness” as more than just a relaxed, playful approach. They regard it in terms of illumination. A light heart is much more than the opposite of a heavy heart. It brings its sense of wonder and awe to the process of connecting with the joyful world of Faeries. Above all, learn to trust your instincts and your intuition as you begin your journey.

Nature spirits are so closely allied to the world of the Faeries that you could say they are one and the same. Therefore, an excellent place to start would be in nature. Spend time walking or sitting quietly in a natural environment and allow your mind to be open to whatever presents itself. How you imagine Faeries may well depend on the cultural and mythological images you have been exposed to since childhood. At this point, it would be good to point out the many, various books, and tarot decks of cards that are available to give you an idea of how diverse the Faeries are.

How Many Kinds of Faeries Are There?

How long is a piece of string? There are so many different kinds of faeries that it is hard to categorize them. They can be grouped together in a relatively loose kind of way, with some of them belonging to the Air and others being more “grounded” and having the Earth as their natural element. You will most likely find that you are drawn towards different Faeries at different times in your life, depending on your needs.

If you sit quietly at the base of a tree, you may well find that Gnomes and other Earth elementals congregate around you. If you are at the top of a hill or mountain, it may be Sprites of the air who whisper their messages to you. Always honor your feelings when connecting with Faeries, and do not question things too deeply. Above all, maintain an attitude of gratitude towards these elementals. Faeries, unlike Guardian Angels, do not tend to bring messages regarding your peace of mind and “safety”. This would be considered far too serious and solemn for them. Instead, they are much more likely to point out one or two things to you that you may be doing that are not actually helping you, and encourage you to change your behavior and thoughts so that you achieve a happier outcome.

Using Oracle Decks and Faery Tarot Cards

There are many decks to choose from, and I am not here to tell you which ones are “best.” You will find that out for yourself, and your cards may become an indispensable part of your Faery journey. Beautiful though many of these illustrated decks are, they are no more than props to help you find your own best way to work with the world of the Fae.

Using cards or books gives you a starting point, and it is often a relief to find that you are not as “weird” as you may have thought you were! For many years, humankind and the world of Faery have been disconnected, even pulled apart through attitudes of hostility, disbelief, and doubt. There is no need for you to justify your feelings regarding Faeries. Still, on the other hand, it can be counter-productive to try to force awareness onto fellow humans who are not ready or unwilling to acknowledge the existence of the world of Faery.

Using oracle cards can start you off, and focussing on just one or two cards at a time can help you to connect more deeply with the Faeries who want to work with you. Faeries like to talk, so do not be afraid of verbalizing your thoughts and feelings to them. You also need to cultivate good listening skills when communicating with Faeries, which includes listening with your heart, emotions, and ears.

Faeries also like to play jokes, including practical ones, so it is important to maintain your sense of humor. When we laugh, at ourselves as well as at the joke, we create a loving environment in which the Faeries can communicate with us. Faeries will never laugh at your pain, but they will gently encourage you to see the funny side of even the most awful situation if you let them.

Final Thoughts

Faeries love to sing and to dance. This is possibly where those songs that we blurt out at random from our thoughts come about. As these songs that come to us most often relate to a situation, and this song that we sing, may bring about a smile or even laughter.  Allow them to guide you into making music and dancing spontaneously. Call upon them to help you rediscover the light, the laughter, and the joy of being alive.
